Pre-Finishing
The key advantage of using microporous, or "breathable" products [ woodstain in the case of the both the Oak & Hardwood sets or a paint system in the case of the White sets ] is the finish will not peel, crack or suffer from premature erosion of the film if the decorative finish is correctly maintained.
For optimum protection, each VF44 set undergoes an intensive 3 stage finishing process. The first stage uses a Base Coat, which is comprehensively applied to every part of the frames and doors, inside and out, to ensure maximum protection.
Stage 2 involves completely sealing the end grain of the wood at the top and bottom of the door stiles and at all joints.
Finally, two spray coats of Top Coat are applied to all surfaces, inside and out.
The final result, in all cases, is a durable, almost impervious finish, which affords superior protection against the elements, ensures greater longevity of the doorset, whilst at the same time enhancing its appearance.
Depending on location and weather conditions, re-coating is recommended every one to five years, but it is also important to check the finish every six months, and re-coat as necessary, to properly maintain the decorative finish and to ensure no moisture enters the timber of the doors and frames during the life of the product.
For when re-coating is required or should remedial repairs to any small scratches or scuffs be necessary, microporous products are widely available from retail stores throughout the UK and ROI. We recommend the use of high build finishes. We do not recommend finishing with Danish Oil or using any finish other than a medium to High Build microporous wood finishing system.
